Maureen Birdsall · Design Engineer
I’m Maureen Birdsall, a Design Engineer, creative director, strategist and entrepreneur. I’ve spent more than 25 years building brands, websites, campaigns, products and companies. My career started in design, grew into one of the early web agencies, expanded into entrepreneurship and executive marketing leadership, and has now moved into modern design engineering.
The through line has stayed consistent. I like complicated problems. I like making them clear. And I like getting the work out into the world.
I founded Birdsall Interactive during the early commercial web and spent more than 25 years helping organizations translate business ideas into digital experiences. The agency launched more than 2,000 websites and worked across brand strategy, design, marketing and technology.
I later founded DateBox Club and built the subscription business from concept through acquisition. At its peak, the business reached more than $2M in annual revenue and more than 7,000 active monthly members. That experience changed the way I think about creative work. I wasn’t designing for a client anymore. I was responsible for the product, customer experience, acquisition, retention, operations and the consequences of every decision.
Most recently, I led marketing at DOXA Talent, where my work spanned brand strategy, digital experiences, content, franchise marketing, AI products, lead generation and multi-channel growth. It also gave me the opportunity to work deeply inside a global organization and build systems that had to scale.
AI changed the distance between an idea and production. I went deep on the technology, including immersive AI training in Vietnam, and began building directly with tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub, Vercel, Next.js, Supabase and Stripe.
The result is a different way of working. I still start with brand, audience, message and experience. I now stay with the work through design, development, deployment and iteration.
What I Mean By Design Engineer
My work sits at the intersection of creative direction, product thinking, interface design and production. I design the experience, work directly in the build, connect the systems it needs, test what ships and keep refining it after launch.
That combination reduces the handoffs that slow traditional creative and website projects down.
